Visiting the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute: An Adventure in Finland’s Forest Research

2024/07/29

The two-month trip to the Research Institute provided great insights into remote sensing research, scientific exchanges and Finnish culture.

In mid-May, I, Mona Goebel, embarked on a two-month journey to the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI), renowned for its cutting-edge work in geospatial science and technology. Located in Espoo, Finland, FGI specializes in various aspects of geospatial research, including satellite-based positioning, remote sensing, and geoinformatics. The institute's modern facilities and projects an ideal environment for professional and personal growth.

During my time at FGI, I had the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of professionals and experts in the field of forest remote sensing. I received guidance and new ideas during my data collection and processing. All this provided me valuable insights into current trends and technologies in remote sensing and forest research, as well as significantly pushed my research in mobile mapping and self-built systems.

In addition to the academic and professional benefits, this trip also gave me the opportunity to learn a lot about Finnish traditions and social values and even some basic Finnish phrases. I learned that they appreciate personal space, directness and are always happy to help you. Finns enjoy nature in their summer cottages, and they have the best saunas.

Overall, this trip was an excellent combination of professional development and cultural exploration, leaving me with lasting knowledge, memorable experiences and new friends.
