Digital Twin

For the module "Project Remote Sensing and Image Analysis", student Florian Horn created a digital twin of our meeting room (L501/452a).

He took 117 overlapping photos of the room, from which he first generated a dense point cloud using photogrammetry methods and then a 3D model. He used this model as the basis for subsequent modeling and texturing. A 3D model can of course also be created purely virtually without photos of objects or spaces. However, photogrammetry can quickly generate a basic framework, saving the modeler a lot of work and time.

The digital twin of our meeting room was integrated into the virtual campus explorer Magical AdvenTUre, in which people who are not familiar with the location can playfully get to know the campus. However, digital twins are now not only found in movies and video games, but also in industry, urban and building planning, and medical research. So there is a lot of potential here for further projects and research.
